A Closer Look at Re-Verber-Ray Patio Heater UV Lamps
Homeowners around the Denver-Boulder metro area continue to be investing in electric powered, infrared radiant patio heaters and our electrical team at Save Home Heat Company is installing more of these versatile, “green” outdoor heaters than ever. Their responsiveness, effectiveness, and even heat distribution make them perfect for families that want to extend outdoor time on their decks or patios into the evening, and even into the colder months of the year.
In this post we’ll take a closer look at the heat source in the DSS Series patio heaters from Re-Verber-Ray that our team installs regularly, specifically, the ultraviolet (UV) heating lamp that’s housed in these heaters.
A Quick Review: What is an Infrared Radiant Patio Heater?
Infrared radiant patio heaters are typically either gas-powered or run off electricity. With today’s movement away from fossil fuel-burning appliances – including local code, in some cases – electric models are the common choice for most homeowners. The big comfort difference with these versatile, outdoor rated heaters is that they produce direct-surface heating similar to what you feel when standing in direct sunlight or near a burning fire. But unlike these examples, infrared radiant heating doesn’t produce discernible light along with the warmth.
The top benefits of electric infrared radiant patio heaters include:
- Highly responsive outdoor heat source
- Provides direct, effective, ‘soft’ radiant warmth
- Heating is focused on surface and floor-level comfort
- Installation flexibility to direct heat where it’s needed most
- Excellent electrical energy efficiency
- ”Green” heating option
- No gas piping or venting needed
- Very low maintenance requirements
While there are a variety of products and brands out there, for outdoor heating applications at home, our team at Save Home Heat almost exclusively installs the Re-Verber-Ray DSS Series electric infrared radiant patio heaters, made by Detroit Radiant Products. Our customers continue to be satisfied with these heaters, which are manufactured by a well established, U.S. based, industry leader.
A Closer Look at the Re-Verber-Ray DSS Series UV Heating Lamp
The UV infrared radiant heating lamp, or bulb, used in the DSS patio heater is made of carbon fiber, very much like Thomas Edison’s first light bulb, but certainly advanced in design and performance. The modern carbon UV lamp used in these heaters has a long service life and a relatively low element temperature, and produces what’s known as medium-wavelength ultraviolet light. The heater gives off a nearly invisible, ‘soft’ radiant heat that directly and comfortably warms the skin and other objects. A notable feature of the DSS patio heaters is their exceptional electrical efficiency and longevity of the UV lamp.
The UV lamp in Re-Verber-Ray DSS Series heaters can be envisioned as a long, cylindrical, very small diameter light bulb, which is encased in a weather-resistant enclosure that’s mounted inside the heater. The UV lamp runs nearly the full length of the radiant heater, whose total length is nearly 35”.
Interestingly, despite its name, a carbon fiber UV lamp also incorporates halogen gas, making it a type of halogen lamp, something that initially can be a bit misleading.
Effective Radiant Heat Delivery
Enhancing this design is an exclusive, custom designed, parabolic reflector that directs an impressive 99% of the emitted rays down toward the target area, helping to ensure that heat is delivered where it’s most desired. The carbon fiber heat lamp and the reflector design of the DSS heater produce an effective and efficient form of direct heating, again, much like the heat you feel from the rays of the sun – sans the lighting.
Re-Verber-Ray DSS Patio Heaters Applications & Certifications
While these infrared radiant patio heaters are an excellent option for Denver-Boulder homeowners looking to supply effective, reliable heat to patios, decks, or other exterior areas, they’re not approved for indoor use in residential applications. The only exception is an attached or detached garage. In those cases, as always, manufacturer-specified clearances from combustible materials must be strictly adhered to.
In addition to outdoor residential applications, the DSS heaters also have approval for commercial/industrial installations
Certifications of the DSS Series patio heaters include:
- ETL (now known as Intertek Testing Services) listed for indoor and outdoor use
- CE (Conformite Europeenne) Certified, meeting a range of European Union health, safety, and environmental requirements
- IP55 (Ingress Protection) certified for water and dust resistance
